NYFW | Pop-Art goes Uptown - Prabal Gurung

Prabal Gurung Spring/Summer 2012

New York Fashion Week - While designing spring, Prabal Gurung plastered his mood board with clippings of star female athletes, fetish photographs, and a reference to rock chick Liz Phair, all evoking some serious girl power. It's wonder the that the young designer turned out a collection that, in a word, dominated. Enjoy the Prabal Gurung Spring/Summer Fashion Show 2012 at the end of this post!

The short, poofy dresses in pastels and a deep grape look in lace were as expertly executed as the drop dead sexy, long and lean cut-out halter dress Karlie Kloss worked down the runway. It's been a big year for Gurung, who was named a runner up in the CFDA / VOGUE Fashion Fund Award in November. This collection was emblematic of the confidence that win gave him and, for the bigness of vision alone, was rather recommendable. It showcased Gurung's technical abilities and desire to push himself.

The manipulated purple floral print made for lovely frocks and pants, but it was also used to great effect on a blazer. The piece is hand-sewn so that, looking at it closely from the back, the pattern is split down the middle, each side a mirror image of the other, like a  high fashion Rorschach test. Or, in Gurung's words, "a technical nightmare".
